Crossroads: Change in Rural America Exhibit Coming to San Elizario’s Los Portales Museum in 2025

The Los Portales Museum in San Elizario, Texas, is proud to announce that it will host the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit, "Crossroads: Change in Rural America," from May 3, 2025, to June 15, 2025. This exhibit, a part of the Museum on Main Street (MoMS) program, explores the evolving landscape of rural America and its impact on the nation’s identity, culture, and future.

To ensure that this exhibit resonates deeply with the local community and highlights the unique cultural heritage of San Elizario and the surrounding Mission Trail area, we have established four dedicated committees: Gastronomy, History, Arts/Crafts, and Culture. With 25 passionate individuals from the community involved, these committees have already convened twice to brainstorm and develop ideas on how to make the exhibit a truly immersive experience.

Some of the exciting concepts under discussion include:

- Curated Menu and Cookbook: The Gastronomy Committee is exploring the possibility of a curated menu that reflects the culinary traditions of the region. They are also considering the creation of a community cookbook that showcases local recipes passed down through generations.

- Historian-Led Discussions: The History Committee is planning a series of discussions led by historians who will delve into the rich history of rural communities along the Mission Trail and their significance in the broader context of American history.

- Plays and Art Workshops: The Arts/Crafts and Culture Committees are envisioning a variety of interactive events, including theater performances and art workshops that allow visitors to engage with the exhibit on a creative level.

While the plans are still being finalized, and the schedule has yet to be set, the committees are dedicated to ensuring that the exhibit not only educates but also fosters a sense of connection and pride within the community.

We are eager to hear from you! Your input is invaluable to us as we work to create an experience that resonates with everyone who visits. Whether you have suggestions, ideas, or simply want to share what you would like to see when you visit our exhibit, we encourage you to reach out.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to shape this exciting exhibit. We look forward to welcoming you to Los Portales Museum next year for what promises to be an enlightening and enriching journey through the crossroads of rural America.
